There’s no legal standard defining what makes a product “clean,” which means the label can mean very different things depending on which brand is using it. That’s not necessarily dishonest, but it does mean the term alone doesn’t tell you much.

What actually matters is understanding what’s in your products and why. Some ingredients have real, well-documented reasons for concern. Others get lumped into “toxic ingredient” lists more because they sound alarming than because the evidence supports it. Knowing the difference is what actually helps you make informed choices, not just avoiding anything with a hard-to-pronounce name.

Here’s how to actually read an ingredient label, what’s genuinely worth paying attention to, and how Neora approaches formulation.

Ingredients Worth Knowing About

Not every ingredient on this list carries the same weight of evidence, and that’s worth being upfront about. Some have real, well-documented regulatory action behind them. Others are still being studied, with research that’s suggestive but not conclusive. We’ll be specific about which is which, so you can make an informed choice rather than just avoiding anything on a scary-sounding list.

Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde Releasers

Formaldehyde is classified as a carcinogen primarily through inhalation, which is why it’s a bigger concern in high-heat applications like keratin hair-straightening treatments than in most rinse-off products used at typical concentrations. It’s also a known skin irritant and common cause of allergic contact dermatitis, which is the more immediate concern for most people. Because it’s a gas, it’s often present as a “formaldehyde releaser” rather than listed directly, common ones include DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, and diazolidinyl urea.

Parabens

Parabens are one of the more debated ingredients in cosmetics. Some research has raised questions about their potential to mimic estrogen at high concentrations, which is why they’re a common ingredient for people to avoid as a precaution. That said, the FDA currently maintains that parabens are safe at the levels used in cosmetics, and continues to monitor emerging research.

Phthalates

Phthalates are a genuine area of concern, and one where regulators have actually acted, the EU restricts several specific phthalates (including DEHP and DBP) in cosmetics. Much of the more alarming research connecting phthalates to health effects comes from broader exposure, plastics, food packaging, industrial sources, rather than skincare specifically, so it’s worth not overstating the skincare-only risk. One practical thing worth knowing: phthalates are often used as a fragrance fixative and can hide under the single word ‘fragrance’ on a label without being individually disclosed.

Synthetic Fragrances

“Fragrance” is one of the most useful terms to understand on a label, because it’s a legal loophole. In the US, fragrance formulas are protected as trade secrets, which means a single word can stand in for dozens of individual ingredients that never have to be disclosed. That opacity is the real issue, not any one specific chemical.

What we do know: synthetic fragrance is one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis in skincare, some fragrance ingredients, including certain aldehydes, are well-documented skin sensitizers, and fragrance is also a common route by which phthalates enter a product, since they’re often used as fixatives to help scent last longer.

If you have sensitive skin or a history of reactions, fragrance-free products, meaning no added fragrance at all, are worth looking for specifically, “unscented” isn’t the same thing, since it can mean a masking fragrance was added to neutralize other scents.

Siloxanes

Siloxanes, commonly known as silicones, are used to soften and smooth texture in moisturizers, primers, and many hair products. Two specific types, D4 and D5, are restricted in rinse-off cosmetics in the EU due to environmental persistence, they don’t break down easily and can accumulate in waterways, and evidence of hormone activity in animal studies. The environmental concern is well-documented and is genuinely the stronger part of this story. The human health evidence at typical cosmetic exposure levels is less settled, worth knowing both sides rather than treating it as a closed case.

Triclosan

This is one of the more clear-cut entries on this list. The FDA banned triclosan and 18 other ingredients from over-the-counter antibacterial hand and body soaps in 2016, effective 2017, after manufacturers couldn’t demonstrate the ingredients were both safe for long-term daily use and more effective than plain soap and water. The EU took similar action the same year, banning triclosan from biocidal products. Both regulators also cited concerns about antibiotic resistance, a real, ongoing public health issue tracked by the CDC. It’s worth noting the ban covers soaps and washes specifically; triclosan is still permitted in some other product categories, so it’s worth checking labels on things like toothpaste.

PEGs (Polyethylene Glycols)

PEGs (polyethylene glycols) themselves are generally considered low-risk and are widely used as thickeners and moisturizing agents. The real concern is a manufacturing byproduct, 1,4-dioxane, which can be left behind as a trace contaminant and is classified as a possible human carcinogen. It’s not an ingredient added on purpose, and levels vary significantly by manufacturer and purification process, which is why sourcing and testing transparency matter more here than whether a product simply contains PEGs at all.

Aluminum

Aluminum compounds have been studied for a possible connection to breast cancer, largely because antiperspirants are applied near breast tissue, but the American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute, and other major health organizations currently state there’s no conclusive evidence linking aluminum in cosmetics to increased cancer risk. It’s reasonable to avoid it as a personal preference, but it doesn’t belong in the same risk tier as something like triclosan, where the evidence and regulatory action are actually settled.

The Beauty of Neora’s Clean and Honest Plant-Based Skincare

Understanding what’s actually in your products doesn’t have to be overwhelming. A few of the ingredients on this list are genuinely worth avoiding where regulators have taken clear action, triclosan and certain restricted phthalates especially. Others are more about informed personal choice than settled science. Either way, reading labels with real understanding, rather than fear, is what actually helps.

Neora formulates without parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and synthetic fragrance across our skincare line, using plant-based ingredients instead, including plant-based retinol alternatives that deliver similar benefits with less potential for irritation. That’s a specific formulation choice, not a marketing claim, and it’s one you can verify yourself by checking the ingredient list on any product page.

Your “clean” skincare products may not be as safe as they claim!
